HHMI, a non-profit medical research organization that ranks as one of the nation's largest philanthropies, plays a powerful role in advancing biomedical research and science education in the U.S. In the past two decades HHMI has made investments of more than $8.3 billion for the support, training, and education of the nation's most creative and promising scientists. The Institute commits almost $700 million a year for research and distributes $80 million in grant support for science education.

The Challenge
Poised for growth, HHMI needed to develop a secure single point of access to all departmental and enterprise-wide information, knowledge, policies and applications. The organization also sought a common interface for all content housed by various systems, providing employees with self-service access via single sign-on, and real time access to data and applications. Furthermore, HHMI needed secure project areas to increase engagement and foster collaboration among teams within the organization.

The Solution
From strategy to design, development and implementation, HHMI partnered with TandemSeven to create MyHHMI, a personalized, customizable enterprise portal for communication, collaboration and access to content for all employees. TandemSeven’s team: 

• Led creation of the vision and strategic roadmap
• Conducted user and stakeholder research to understand unmet needs, pain points and opportunities 
• Surveyed the existing technology environment, developed a vendor RFP and defined technical requirements 
• Created the information architecture, and interaction and visual design
• Designed, developed, integrated and deployed the platform and supported applications

A sample of the solutions delivered include personalized and customizable workspaces, pervasive productivity toolbars, sophisticated sorting and filtering tools, integrated administration and content management and single sign-on integration for all applications and support material.

The Results
 MyHHMI was recently named "World's Ten Best Intranets of 2010" by Nielsen Norman Group. TandemSeven crystallized HHMI’s needs and delivered a highly interactive, role-based enterprise portal that fosters collaboration and content creation among geographically dispersed employees. The MyHHMI portal integrates and extends HHMI’s existing brand, streamlines business processes, provides real-time access to a wealth of institutional data and applications, and fosters collaboration among dispersed user groups. The portal exemplifies HHMI’s brand, quality and commitment while achieving their business goals to support growth.
