U.S. Bank: Contributing to increased market share by taking a user-centered approach to platform strategy

The Challenge:

Strike the balance between having enough detail to manage complex deals while simultaneously streamlining day to day workflow challenges

As clients of U.S. Bank, CLO asset managers demanded more data transparency to enable them to make more accurate and timely investment decisions. In addition, they sought technology that could streamline their day-to-day processes through improved data file management and a simplified reconciliation workflow. Not much investment in the digital experience had been made in this traditionally data heavy systems environment with its complex business rules and workflows.

The Approach:

Really understand users and then exceed their expectations!

TandemSeven conducted 82 customer interviews in pursuit of insight and potential areas for innovation. This helped our design team craft a strong solution that could operate on multiple levels of data aggregation for a range of critical user roles. By understanding that all users expectations of a digital experience had been raised by more modern and intuitive interfaces in the retail/consumer arena, the team was able to make design decisions that helped to simplify problem identification and decision making in contexts that had previously been overwhelmed with too much undifferentiated information.

The Result:

U.S. Bank market share increases 40% in first year of new portal

The new portal, Pivot has quickly become a competitive advantage for U.S. Bank, receiving rave reviews from clients and potential clients alike. Pivot is credited as a key factor in U.S. Bank attaining an increase in market share from 32 to 45 percent of CLO issuances—a market share 32.5 percentage points above its nearest competitor. Pivot’s design is simple and intuitive, created with a clear data hierarchy that allows users to easily navigate from high-level summary information down to more detailed data.

Highlights of new capabilities include:

  • Critical alerts about deal milestones, pending trades and unexpected changes to their holdings.
  • A dashboard that provides timely information and insights into metrics across client portfolios.
  • The ability to see changes over time to streamline the reconciliation process.
  • A self-service reporting area that allows clients to access historical deal data and compliance test results.

“TandemSeven delivered the critical insights and design that shaped our Pivot portal into a competitive advantage for US Bank CDO issuance.”
